Position Summary:

The SAM-CS team is currently looking for a passionate, energetic, detail-oriented individual to join our staff as an Engineer-in-training.  The candidate will be involved with design and construction oversight and inspection, and auditing of quality processes associated with a large design-build project in the Austin, TX area working directly with the Project Manager.  All work will be under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer with opportunities for advancement. The ideal applicant will have some understanding of the TxDOT Design-Build Quality Assurance Plan (QAP), TxDOT Contract Administration Manual, TxDOT standards and specifications, and general construction practices.  This position entails both office and limited field assignments.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under the review and direction of Project Manager, performs field inspection and oversight of construction activities
  • Perform oversight of QA personnel to ensure contract compliance
  • Assist in management of field and laboratory testing personnel to ensure that testing requirements are met
  • Assist in the review of Critical Path Method schedules
  • Assist in composing a quarterly materials report to the Federal Highway Administration addressing all materials placed in the project
  • Assist in composing monthly and annual audit reports
  • Analyze roadway design plans for compliance with contract requirements
  • Assist with scheduling and coordinating project meetings with the client, the project team, and the developer
  • Review Contract documents, engineering plans, and technical specifications to verify compliance with governmental regulations and conformance with project requirements
  • Document construction progress by submitting daily inspection reports and updating schedules.
  • Collect field measurements and update plans for production of as-built drawings
  • Verify accuracy of payment requests and invoicing for completed work
  • Auditing of developer and design-builder plans and reports
  • Construction observation and verification
  • Traffic control compliance reviews
  • Review and comment on requests for information, non-conformance reports and lane closure requests
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience - Education and Skills

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering from ABET Accredited University or related field required
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and organizational skills are essential
  • Proficiency with MS Office software is required, and experience with MicroStation and Geopak, or AutoCAD programs is a plus
  • E.I.T. preferred or ability to obtain in 6 months, but professional registration is not required
  • Other requirements typically include: ability to climb ladders, stoop and squat; ability to observe construction activities and distinguish colors; and ability to perceive back-up alarms and other warnings
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Prior work experience preferred and an ability to demonstrate an understanding of the Texas Department of Transportation 2004/2014 Standard Specifications for Construction and Maintenance of Highways, Streets and Bridges
  • Prior work experience preferred and an ability to demonstrate an understanding of TxDOT materials sampling and testing, and familiar with the Guide Schedule of Sampling and Testing; and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD)
